THE KAIWARRA MURDER

. « (PHB PRESS ASSOOIATKWi) Wellington, June 21, After lunoheon to-day tbe following evidence was taken : — John Tasker, clerk In the Olvtl Servloe, produced several paoketa of newspapers and scraps of papers whioh had been banded him by tbe polioe. He alao produced papers whioh he had reoslved from Dr Oahlll. Tbe papers and frag* ments were of the "Evening Post" of November 17cb, 1880, May 23rd and Slat, 1889. One of these papers wis part of columns 1 and 2, page 2 of the " Post," and the other pieoe waa portion of columns 1 and 2, page 4. The first of these pieces fitted with pieces of exhibit handed to blm by Constable Oar roll. It was found aleo that they fitted pleoes of paper handed hi on by Dr Oahlll. Among tbo pleoes of paper banded him by Oon. stable Oarroll, he found one which fitted column 1 of page 4. Among the pleoei handed him by Inspeotor Thompson, he found a portion of page 4, oolumo 2. Witness had kept eaoh packet separate, and swore that the contents of eaoh had not got mixed. — By Mr Bunny : Wltneaa had been oonneotud with the Polioe Department of the Government Sorvloo for the past seven years. Tha witness, at some length explained the manner In which the pleoes of paper fitted eaoh other. He pointed out that "From" "Nehon," «• Tenerlffo," and other words bad been torn through, and tbat on gumming the pieces of paper together, he had made the oomplote words. He deposed that he had seen the word " Kaltangata" among the pleoea, and on looking up tho files of tbe paper, he found that the piece was from a "Post " of 81st May, the date of the murder, A " Poat" of tbe 31st May lant was fonnd among the papers taken from tbe prisoner, bnt It waa quite whole. — By Mr Bell : He only reoeived tbe papers from Constable Oarroll on one occasion. Inspeotor Thompson, reoalled, deposed that he reougnlaed the envelope marked " F" In the box marked "F." The oohtenta were found In the bedroom of Louis Ohemls on Ist June. He took the papers from another envelope, and pit Odd tbem In the envelope now before the Court. This onded the case for the prosecution, and as the Magistrate oousldered tbat Buffiolent evidence had been adduoed to make a prima facie oate, aooused, who reserved nla doieuoo, was committed fof trial.
