FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA.

Heavy rains have fallen, causing floods m all parts of the colony, and great damage has resulted. The residents of the township of Avoca had to forsake their homes and seek refuge on higher ground, m consequence of the rising of the flood waters. A large quantity of stock has been drowned m the Chiltern district. The Murray river overflowed its banks at Woodonga, submerging a large tract of country, and the inhabitants of Bowenvale were rescued by boats. A buggy was washed away at Elmore, and two of the occupants, Misses Powell and Zalpin wire drowned. The townships of Newstead, Guilford and Baninghup, m the Castlemaine district are under water. ~ The floods are the heaviest experienced since 1870. Hobabt, Jane 14. Heavy gales are raging on the coast, and many vessels are m jeopardy. The barque Natal Queen broke her moorings, but was recovered ud> damaged, The Union Company's steamship Rotoraahana had to leave Hobart for New Zealand m the face of the gale. Heavy floods are general, and the lower part of Hobart if threatened with inundation.
