WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPEEANCE UNION

The annual tea meeting of the Ashburton Branch of the W.C.T.U. took place at the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday evening. There was a good attendance The taDlcs were presided over by Mesdames Scott, Blake, Buttle, Fox/Meech, Andrews, Sawle and Miss Murray, who bad made very nice arrangements (or the guest. After tea the: chair t was taken by Rev Mr Butile, The report of the year's work 1 was read by Mrs Carson. It showed that the Union has been iv existence for two ye»rs. Commencing with a membership of 15,' during it? first year it advanced to 21, and m its second it had, reached to 331 A Young Women's Union had been formed during thtt year, Jhe efforts ol the Uuian had been put forth m giving aid to those m destitute circumstances, visitation of the sick, holding cottage prayer meetings m homes where the inmates were unable 10 attend Church, and tract distribution, A Band of Hope had been started and gave promise of iu.urc success. The weekly meetings m the Templar Hall had been regularly maintained. Meniioh was made of the services of the President, Mrs Cawsey, for her assiduous Jabors m promoting the welfare of the Union. The visit of Miss Ackerman was referred to. Forty persons signed the pledge as a result of the meetings conducted by th»s lafiy. The first annual report of the Youna W.C.T.U. was reau by the Chairman at the request of Mrs E. A. Scott. This branch had b!.en inaugurated on June 5, 1888. Mrs Scott acceptei the superintendency. The following officers were elected : President, Miss Murray; Vice-President, Miss Sawle, Treasurer, Miss darson ; Secretary, Miss Kingston. Weekly meetings had been held during the year witli the exception of a short period m the summer. These had been first held m the Templar Hall but now were being held m Saunders 1 Uwildings. In connection with the mother Union, a concert had been held, the proceeds of which (£ip) had been devoted to benevolent purposes. The following had been elected ijficcrs for the current yi^, President; MiBB Murray (ree'ected); Vice-President, Mjss M, Alcorn j Treasurer, Miss W. Cookson, and Secretary, MissTulley. ■ Addresses were delivered by the Chairman, Revds Sawle, Bcattie, Boothroyd, and Captain Thompson of theSalvationArmy. MisscsCarson and Fox contiibuted a pianoforte duet. Songs were rendered by Misses Kidd and Steel, and Mr Gamble- Six little girls m connection with the Band of Hope gave a dialogue with pleasing effect, and Ada Baker was successful m a recitation, After the usual votes of thanks, the meeting was closed with the bene« diption by tljt'e Key Ay M.
