ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL.
■ A meeting of householders to elect a School Committee for the distriot of Aahburton— the former eleotion having been deolared void — was held last evening. There was a good attendance of householders, and Major Steward was voted to the ohair.
The Chairman having read the notice oalling the meeting called for nominations for the Committee. He explained the qualifications required of oommitteemen and voters by the Aot.
The following gentlemen were nominated : —Messrs W. Oraighead, W. J. Siloook, E. J. Paul, Jaß. Porter, A. Cook, G. F. Soott, W. T. Kingston, Gideon Soott, B. S. Bean, J. Banger, J; Edwards, W. B. Mops, J. H. Twentyman, T. E. Kilworth, J. Orr, B. W. Jenkins.
Messrs Jameson and Braddell were appointed scrutineers, and a ballot was then taken. While the Borutineera were oounting the votes, Mr Siloook Baid that he protested againßt the ruling of the Chairman with regard to those who were entitled to vote. He maintained that the Chairman had allowed people to vote who were not entitled to do so. Several persons not residents m the school distriot were present and had ezeroised votea,
The Chairman Baid that Mr Siloook was quite entitled to enter a protest, but when the result of the eleotion was ascertained he would inform the meeting thereof, and until the protest was upheld by a higher authority the Committee oould enter upon and disoharge the duties of their position. He read the interpretation of the word *' householder," as it appeared m the Aot. By this any adult, male or female, who was owner, tenant, lessee or oooupier of any dwellinghonse, shop, warehouse or other building m the district was entitled to vote, and also any parent or guardian who was liable to maintain or had the aotual custody of a ohild was entitled to a vote whether resident m the distriot or not.
Mi Moss thought the objection made by Mr Siloook should have been made before the voting had olosed. Perhaps Mr Siloook might be returned at the head of the poll, and then he would be sorry for what he had done. (Laughter). Mr Siloook said that was the reason that had aotuated him m taking the objection before the result was deolared. It would be looked upon as bad taste on his part if he were unsuccessful and made his protest after the result had been made known. The result of the eleotion was deolared as follows :—
Messrs Silaook, Oraighead, Banger, Gideon Soott, Bean, Porter and Twentyman were declared duly eleoted.
Mr Siloook on moving a vote of thanks to the Chairman, aaid that although at the head of the poll, he still intended to protest against the ruling of the Chairman m regard to the qualification of voters. The vote of thanks to the Chairman having been oarried the meeting oonoluded.
A meeting of the newly eleoted Committee was subsequently held. Mr Siloook was eleoted Chairman. Mr J. 0. Dunoan was appointed Seoretary to the Committee at a salary of £10 per annum. — Letters were received from three intending candidates for the headmasterahip when vacant, asking for information m referenoe to the post. No aotion was taken.— Some routine business was transacted and the meeting adjourned.
