The Committee of gentlemen interested m the hall-holiday movement who during the past lew weeks have been canvassing the business men ot Ashburton with a view ox securing the closing of ail plaoeß of business on Wednesday afternoon, have on the whole met with a very large measure oi success, the great majority of the employers having willingly consented to the proposal. There are a lew, however, who are inolined to stand out unless there is coupled with the agreement to olose on Wednesday afternoons an undertaking to olose at 6 o'clook p.m. on every other day except Saturday. No doubt this early closing on ibur days of the week woaid be a great boon and we should gladly see it brought into operation, out U ltbe not found practicable just at present, we altogether fail to see wliy that circumstance should be allowed to prevent the realisation ot tue Wednesday haU-huii day. As to the latter, that whicu is practicable at inyercargili and liuaaru ib surely practicable here, 1 and at least it deserves a trial, .'ihis, • indeed, we are glad to hear, it is likely to have, for we are informed that it is the general intention to olose on Wednesday afternoon next|-whioh is the time seieewdifor the Fire brigade demoQetration. If both thing's— early^closing and halfholiday—can be<*ccomplished, so much the better, bat if we can only have one good thing at a time let us at least have that one first, and then work earnestly to achieve" the other also.
