THE PAYNE FAMILY

Referring to the Payne family who will give one performance m Ashburton next Tuesday evening, the "Otago Daily Times" says:— This exceptionally talented family made their first Danedin appearance last night, and more than justified (he eulogistic reports that preceded them. It seemed to be intuitively known that the Paynes were really clever, for the seating accommodation of the building waa taxed to the utmoßt before 8 o'olook, and a number of people had to be oontent with standing room only. Their part-singing (unaooompanieil) is extraordi* narily good, and calls for warmeßt praise, " The Bella " was the best vooal item. Tha performers gaTe a most olever imitation at the harsh metallic clang and tbe softer vibrations of the bellg, and the modulation and the whole management of ihe voices* 'was consummately olever. The anthem "He shall feed His flock " was magnificently rendered. Of the other part songa, the beat were the slave melody " Steal away to Jesus " and the humorous compositions, whioh comprised very funny sneezing and sobbing songs. Miss Lizzie has a freah and strong soprano -voice, a 2.,, Ml m^ elll 2.' a voioei a managed with great Blull. The " Three little Maids from school' trio, from "The Mikado," has never: been eungso well m Dunedin as it was by Misses Lizzie, Nellie, and Maude. Payne last night. Miss Lizzie's violin solo, " The Last Row of Summer," was treated with a lightnsss that waß rather astonishing. As a violinist Miss Maud has ability as an ezeoutant wondsrful for one so young. Wherever drollery was required, the facial expressions of Mtssn Steele and W. J. Payne .stood m good stsad. The entertainment on tha whole was one of peoaliar attraotiveness. ' ■■ ■-
