The Oounoil of Aehburton have made what seems an absurd arrangement as regards thrashing machines, &c, crossing the Ashburton Bridge, viz., m that they most cross between the hours of 12 and 1 o'olook j p.m. , aud at a rate not to exceed one mile ' per hour. Now that simply means owners must comply with the bye-law, paying a heavy, fee, and remain idle for hours waiting tbe hour of departure; all the time a number of men kept idle during the most buy season of the year, and it may be tbat such delay will remit m heavy ptctintary loss to tbe farmer at a time when prices of grain rre fluctuating. It is surely enough that tbe Council exact a heavy fee for crossing, and that maohine owners by taking due precaution not to collide with other traffic on the bridge, shonld be allowed to crois at any hours from sunrise to sunset (of course giving precedence to H.M. mads) more especially m these short winter days. It Is to be hoped a better arrangement will be made before another haivest. I am, eto., Stmpatht,
