Some at least of the many Ashbnrtonites who took advantage of the excursion train yesterday to pay a visit to Timaru will have noticed with pleasure the handsome granite drinking fountain which has been set np m the triangular space opposite the Post Office m that town as a memorial of the Queen's Jubilee, and remembering that Ashborton also has been promised her jubilee memorial, will naturally have wondered when it is going to become a visible fact As the public is aware the memorial is to take the shape of a public clock to be placed m the building which Berves the dual purpose of municipal offices and a public library m Baring Square, tho " tower" of which is to be raised several feet and will then be m verity something like a tower) from which the tones of tbe dock beil are expected to be heard throughout the business part of the town, and where travellers by rail and road can see at any moment tbe time of day. It is also known that a tender for the supply of the clook has been accepted, and that one of our city fathers has offered to donate the bricks for the tower, but there all information with regard to the matter ends, and there is certainly no visible sign of preparations for getting the building ready for its reception, or for placing the clock m position ; and as cloi3 upon two yearß have elapsed since the proposal was mooted and subscriptions for the jubilee memorial collected, we fancy it is abont time that there was something tangible, or rather perhaps m this case we should say visible and audible to show for it. Will the Memorial Committee or the municipal authorities, or somebody who knows, kindly enlighten the public as to when it is likely that this will be the case ?
