THE VOLUNTEERS.

The following olroular hit been Issued : Defence OffiV, Wellington, 17th May, 1889. In order to encourage Individual target practice In the Volnnteer Force, the Hid, the DefeDc? Minister has approved of the following medals, wbloh will bo distributed, on the oonditloos hereafter detailed being oonformed to :— 1. A. gold medal for the beet ahot In eaoh island. 2. A gold and silver medal for the second beat shot Id eaoh Island. 3. A aliver medal for the best shot m eaoh distrior, eioladlng the holders .of the medals detailed m parsgrspba 1 and 2 4. The medal m each oate to become the ptoperty of the highest scorer, if won three times m saooesston, or five times at Intervals. 5. Marksmen, who mast be efficient Volunteers, are alone eligible to oompett for these medals. 6. The dlstanoe to be fired will be 200 yaida standing, 300 yards kneeling, 500 yards In any position : ten rounds at each distance.. 7. The competition In eaoh district to take place between Ist of January, and 31»t of Msrob, on aaob day as may be appointed, and to ba nnder the personal saperlntendaooe of an officer of the Permanent or Dlstriot Staff. 9. The original soores to be signed by the officer* superintending the firing, and to be * forwarded by first matl to the Defence Offioe, through the Officer oommandlng the distrlot. 9. Ties will be deotded as provided for by Musketry Instruction, 1887.
