1 On Saturday afternoon a football match was played between teams representing the above. There was a good attendance ■ of spectators and the weather was all that ooold.be desired with the exoeptlon of a light bre i za blowing from the south-west. The mat oh waa played In two spells of 45 mlaules e*oh. E. J Fooks, the Aahburton oaptalu, won the tosa and elected to take the advantage of what breeze waa blowing. Lyne kicked off for the College and the ball waa well returned by Bruoe. The play hovered about the centre of the ground lot a»me time aod waa then taken into the visitors' territory, where a fr*e« kick was awarded the looal men, Tho kick at goal, was at a difficult angle and the ball went ju«t beneath the bar, the College being toroed down. The ball being kicked off, the College played up well and took It down Into the Ashburton twenty-five, but did not hold their advantage long, and neither side seemed for the time being to have muoh the baat of it. Towards the end of the first spell, the looal men took the ball to within a few yards of I their opponents' goal line, where Hugonln obtaining the ball from a throw -in kaooked over a couple of men and aoored a try near the ooraer flag Fooks took tbo klok at goal and again landed the ball underneath the btr. Shortly after this half-time was called, with the ball In the looal men's twenty-five, the score being : Ashburtan, 1 point ; College, nil. On the game being returned the visitors recognising lhat their opponents were sirongsr than they hah reokoned npon played with more dash, and clearly showed by their ; slaver passing and combination generally that they had had the advantage of more piaotloe together than the local men. After about fifteen minutes pier during the greater part of which time the visitors had the best of the game the Ashbnrton full-busk, Buehanan, mulled the ball and allowed Swanton to get In aod obtain a try, from «hioh however no goal resulted. On the ball being kicked off the looal men headed by A. Fooks. followed up very smavtly and got on to the oollege backs before they had time to return, and looked very like scoring bnt time waa soon afterwards called with the ball m the College twenty«ftve, the score being :— College 4 points, Ashborton 1 point. For the visitors Berney played a sterling game at thiee~quarter-baok, being ably seconded by others whose names ooold not be ascertained. Amongst the forwards MoKonile, Lyne, and otheri were promt* nent and the team altogether played np very well and Is likely to give a good account of itself during the season. For Ashburtoa-Rskeia, 0. Moore, (who was a host In himself) Larrlman and Reid ware most conspicuous behind the scrums. YouDg Biuae at foU-baok played a very safe game while there. Of the forwards it would be difflault to piok out any who distinguished themselves above the rest as all worked hard, and with a little more praotloe together the team would develope Into one whioh wonld be hard to beat. A match will take plaoe on Saturday next between the Ashburtoo team, and one from the Esst Ohrlstohuroh olub,
