ASHBURTON BOROUCH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Aihboxton Boroagh Oonnoll was held last night. Present :— The Mayor and Conn. olUora Williamson, Kelr, Bird, R, JMedlander, MaoUrlane, Scott, Scaly. Total, £89 163 2d. OOBRBBPO9DB2TCB. Lettera were read (1) From the Western Fire Brigade agreeing to the amalgamation of the two Brigades on the lines proposed. — (2) From Mr J. B. Baohanan asking that concrete channelling be laid Id Oox atreet, and agreeing to pay portion of the expense of laying the channel past his section and the adjoining one.— Referred to the Works Committee with power to aot. HBBEBVBS COMMITTEE. The ReaetTei Committee reported that they had again considered Mr Segers 1 application for a Glasgow lease, and now reoommended that the amount to be paid by Mr Segers be £250 instead of £300 as previously proposed. The Committee also reoommended that if the offers made to the respective tenant! be not promptly aooepted they should be re-considered. ■ The report was adopted, and it wai deoided that nnlesi those tenant! to whom Glasgow leases had been offered signified their aooeptanoe within a month, the offer* ahonld lapse. XKGIffEEBS' BSPOBT. , The Bngtneera reported as follows :— The Works Committee considered the application made by Mrs Batler for an asphalt footpath to be laid at the hotel at the corner of Havelock and Oass streets, and recommend that the work be done on the nsaal terms. — Planting and protection at the river : The Works Committee recommend that some planting be done with large willows and protected by dry pine trees with sufficient iron piles to firmly moor them. , The report was adopted. WEIGHTS AKD MEASURES. Or Scaly asked if any resident Inspector of Weights and Measures for Ashburton bad been appointed, The Mayor replied that Sergt Felton had been appointed. It was stated that there were no appliaßoes here for the proper testing of aeaUf, and the Mayor was requested to mqolsa Into the matter. XEB ÜBBABT Or Beott said that he notloed another letter m the paper In regard to the nonlightlng of the gas m the Library, TFbe Clerk explained that on the day In question he had gone hone indisposed, and the matter bad escaped his mind. If two keys were provided for the door, so that his son might have one, the matter would be sore of receiving attention. It waa decided that a duplicate key be procured. XHB DOMAIN -The Mayor said that ne had, m accordance with the wish of the Council, Interviewed the Solloltor, who expressed the opinion that the Council was legally entitled to spend money m the improvement of the Domain. TOBIGIBTERBD DOGS It was resolved to call the attention of tfce police to the number of unregistered dogs within the Borough, and to request them to take proceedings against the owners. PAYMENTS. Accounts amounting to £90 were passed tot payment and the Council adjourned, 1
