It will have been a surprise to onr readers to find the last argument of socialists and anarchists — dynamite brought into play m New Zealand. We had fondly counted upon uniniunity from this sort of thing, which we have been accustomed to regard as one of the exclusive characteristics of life m Old World communities, but our pleasant confidence m that immunity, so far as New Zealand is concerned, is rudely dispelled by the news of tbe outrage which has oc curred at Cape Foulwind. There a store belonging to certain contractors has been blown up by this tremendous explosive, and the perpetrators of the outrage, if not deliberately intending murder, were, at least, utterly reckless of tbe consequenoes to human life, for there were m the building at the time three men who were sleeping m their beds when the explosion occurred, and whose escape was nothing short of marTellons, as the sides and front of the building were blown out, and the noise of the explosion was heard half a mile away. Tho motive for this extraordinary outrage is not apparent, as it is stated that the relations existing between the contractors and their employers were of the most friendly character, nor does it appear to be traceable to any labor organisation as it is added that tho Trades Union men are indignant at the conduct of the perpetrators. It would therefore seem that the key to the mystery must be sought m some private grudge, if it be not, as we would prefer to suppose, the act of some madman. At present there appears to be no clue to the guilty person, but it is to bo hoped that the police will yet be successful m getting on his track and bringing to book the perpetrator of one of the most dastardly outragas ever recorded m the colony.
