BURNING OF A THEATRE.

DAMAGE (JTKB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, April 22. A disastrous fire broke out at 530 this evening m the Bijou Theatre, which, alrng wiih the Palace Hotel adjoining, was destroyed. The fire was stil burning at 10 o'clock, but was under control. The scarcity of water was severely felt, and the Biigades were rendered helpless. Three firemen were killed by a falling wall, and three other? were seriously injured. It is believed that the damage will exceed but owing to the holiday no accurate information can te obtained. (Received ApH) 23, 12.10 p.m.) Melboubnb, April 23 The fire originated m the dress circle of the theatre, and the building was speedily destroyed. The Palace Hotei was saved, though considerably damaged by water. The establishment ol Messrs Marshall (printers), was destroyed. Capt. Parsons, of the Ea:t Melbourne Fire Brigade, and a man named Williams, were killed by the fall of a wall, and Firsmen Pen, Banks, Scott, Morris and Dando, and Lieut Thomas and, Constable Coffey were seriously injured. r The total . damage amounts to .£40,000.
