The public generally will have been pleased to notice by the report of Thursday's proceedings m the Kesident Magistrate's Court, that the police have acted upon the hint we gave recently as to the necessity of something being done to abate the whistling nuisance which has latterly been so great an annoyance to audiences at public entertainments by bringing to book one of the supposed offenders. We say supposed because the testimony of tbe constable as to the identity of the offender was not corroborated,but on the other hand declared to be mistaken by a witness wbo was m the immediate company of the accused on the occasion m question] and who swore that he was not the guilty party. It is a pity that one of the real offenders —one who could conclusively be proved to be such— was not befor the Court as from the remarks made by Mr Wray there can be no doubt that he would have received a salutary lesson. * That gentleman evidently is aware of the annoyance caused to order-loving people by the practice which it is sought to put a stop to, and the larrikins of Ashburton will do well to amend their ways m this particular, or some of them will certainly get into serious trouble. A good sharp punishment [will have a very excellent effect and that Mr Wray will inflict it if he gets the chance he has plainly intimated. Let us hope tbe warning will be effectual.
