Auckland, April 18. A young man named McLean was killed yesterdty, at Walpa, by tbe fall of a tree. Members of tbe H. A.O B. Soolety presented Bro Falrweather, the President of the Auckland branch, with a gold cross last night.

Wanganui, April 19. A deputation from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, consisting of Messrs Duthie and Gale, wafted on the Local Chamber with reference to terms of trading. Mr Duthie fltated the purposes of tho deputation, and said tbat it must be obvious to all that the long credit given by wholesale houses to retailers, ani by retailers to their customers was largely responsible for the unhealthy condition into which trade m New Zealand has fallen. Thia faot he said waa admitted, but there would bo come diffioulty m remedying It, However, a large number of merchants m the principal oentres had agreed to a limitation of terms of oredit to take effect from first June or July next, and they were now endeavoring to ascertain how they would be supported m their action. Mr Gale also expressed hia opinion on the subject After a general conversation it was decided not to pass any resolution at present, but to postpone the consideration of the question to next quarterly meetiog of the Wanganni Chamber.

He is supposed to have died two days previously. At tbe inquest held to-day a verdict of "Found Dead " was returned. Deceased was a single man over 50 years of age, and had been a resident of the district twenty years. He had been drinking. At the annnal meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Eduoatlon yesterday a lengthy discussion re Inspectors followed on Mr Alfred Saander'a motion to reduce the number to two and to pay them £500 each, this to oover travelling expensed. An amendment that the salaries be ralosd to £500 with travelling . allowances w»b proposed. Both matters were deferred till next meeting consequent on the lahe sitting. Mr J. Having whipped a blanket round him and carried him outside, she returned to put out the fire as «he supposed. She then went out again to examine the obild, and whl'e doing ao the fire revived In the house.. The woman being exhausted by her exertions could do nothing to stay it.
