THE DEVOLUTION IN HAYTI

The captain of the steamer Harold* whloh left Port de la Paix, Haytl, on the 20th nit, reports that a battle was fought recently at La Grande Saline between the troops of President Legitlme and General Hlppolyte, la which the former was routed. It is added that two hundred prisoners were taken, lnoladlng twelvs generals, all of whom, the report say, were inhumanly butchered. The gunboats subsequently landed a foroe of 330 men to hold the place, and sailed on the 25th. Six hundred of General Hlppoly te'i troops, who had meanwhile been lying In ambush round the town, oonolnded their arrangemeuta on the 27tb, when they poured into the plaoe, surprising General Legltime's men t who, with no meaus of threat, were compelled to depend on their own 'resources for defending the town. The jattaoklng foroe showed no quarter, and no priiqnevs were Uljan. After many of General LeglClme's men had either been killed or wounded, those who still survived fled towards the shore, but they were pursued and shot down, not one being spared. The gunboats meanwhile had proceeded to St Marc, whloh place they shelled, destroying many buildings. Two of the inhabitants were killed and many wounded, 12 of them mortally. General Cauyine, one of President Legitime'a commanders, was shot for treason," The 11 Herald " account says nothing of the 12 generals being shot, but several other reports mention the oircumstanoe."
