AMERICAN WHITE FISH
(♦'Nelson Colonist.") Mr A. Greenfield, the hou secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, informs ua that he received a visit from Mr Fanzelow, who lives at the head of Lake Rotoiti, who reports that one moonlight night not long since ha was rowing on the lake nesr the mouth of a crtek, when he observed a large sho»l of fish disporting themselves m tbe waters. By the bright moonlight he was able to see that tbe fish differed materially from trout, and by their general appearance it occurred to him that they must be specimens of the Amerioan white fish. He deeoribed them as of a brilliant white color, from 12 to 18 inches m length, and generally resembling the shape of the kawaf. Be was quite certain they were not trout, and* aaya that they were m a large shoal. He offers, with the permission of the Acclimatisation Society, to catch two or three specimens and bring them down to the city for identification. It Is belived that these fish must be the result of the ova. wbioh was obtained by Mr John Eerr from the United States Government. Two ship* ments were sent from America, and both of these prove thoroughly BucoassfuL After considerable trouble had been expjrfenoed, the ova was successfully placed m a creek leading into the lake. No positive information has been received by the sooiety as to any of the fish having been seen hitherto, and it is hoped that Mr Faneslow's discovery may prove to be that of tbe white fish, which will be a moat useful addition to the fish supply of the colony.
