THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

At last this long looked forward to enterprise has passed from the region of things possible or probable to that of things certain — the news published yesterday indicating that all the difficulties which have arisen or have been thrown m its way have been happily Burraounted. After the settlement of the disputed and difficult points which cropped up m connection with the satisfactory adjustment of the terms of the contract there remained behind the one supreme difficulty of providing the necessary funds, and for a long time it seemed as if this would prove the one thing whioh could not be accomplished, and only a few days ago so despondent had many of the friends of the railway become that one of our West Coast contemporaries openly abandoned all hope m the matter. The news therefore that this last obstacle is finally removed is all the more welcome and we may now look for the vigorous prosecution of this great work, the benefits accruing from which will speedily be felt on both sides of the dividing range, and which will ultimately open to Canterbury farmers a new market and to the people of Westland will mean a substantial increase of their nett earnings by considerably cheapening the cost of living. Very heartily to be congratulated are the Company and all thoße who have so earnestly labored to promote this great enterprise, nor they only, but the whole colony which must benefit by tb.e impetus which the completion of this great arterial line will give on this side of the l t dmde " to agricultural; and on that to mining industries.
