MUSICAL AND LITERARY SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Musical and Literary Society was held m the Church on Thursday night, the Rev Mr Beattie beia* m the chair, with a fair attendance of last ye&r'k mexnbera and a number of new ones. All tho old officers were re elee'ed, with the addition of Mr Wallace an a vie 3-president, and Mr Kersel as musical conductor. The accountß and balance sheet for the past year were received and passed and a committee of fourteen ladiea and gentlemen appointed for this year's work. A short musioil programme wbb then effectively rendered, th'a consisting of two piano sotoa by Miss Kldd (who also acted as aocompanylst), and oongs by Messrs J. Kera.l, C. Lane, Griffin and E. Crafghead. Mr KereelY two socga, viz, " Rolling home to Bonny Scotland," and "Scotch Lassie Jean." were both well sung and given without accompaniment. Mr Oraighead's song was well rendered, the aooompanlmeot being played by Miss Boyle m her usual good style. Mr O. Lane also gave his two songs very effectively j this gentleman baa a fine voice, with good knowledge of how best to use it, and will be an acquisition to Ashborton muiioal olrolea. The new committee met after the programme was concluded, and arranged for the naxt meeting to take place m thiee weeks, when refreshments . will be provided, a subcommittee were also appointed to arrange a syllabus for the coming session
