PRESENTATION.

An interesting little oeremony took place ontiaturday around" the atone "m this office, the occasion being the leaving Ashburton, whence ho is removing for family reasons, of Mr H. V. Sawtell, wbo for the past aix years has been foreman, of the "Guardian," and for the last three of the •• Mail " also. It took the form of the presentation of a farewell addreßß signed by the members of the staff, who are one and all sorry at the breaking up of the pleasant relations so long subsisting between ihem and Mr Sawtell. The uddresa, which is on parohment, and is handsomely framed m bird's ©} c maple, has been-beautifully illuminated by Mr Nathaniei Wolfe, of Ohrißtohurch, upon whose t.ti.e and artistic execution it refleots great credit. ■ The border is a beautiful example of soroll-work with foliate ornaments m orimson and blue O pon a cream ground with panels containing some choice moroeaux of New Zealand scenery, and l Jr e T°2 y of tbe addreßß « written m old English text with illuminated capitals, and has an appropriate heading m whioh are neatly Bketched a printing pre B s and on either Bide a compositor at work at caße. Following is the addreßß • — "ToH. V.Sawtbli,, DearSir,^- " As you are about to leave this town, and consequently this office, we the undersigned, the staff of the Ashburton " Mail " and « Guardian " take this opportunity of bidding you farewell, and of presenting you with this testimonial as a token of the kindly and pleasant relations that have existed between the pompanionshipandyour^lfin the oapapitv of overseer. ' r

The presentation wai made In the name of the signatories by Mr Steward, who spoke m warm termo of appreciation of the faithful servloa rendered by Mr Sawtell, and of hla excellent qualities at ft man and a« » tradesman, concluding by wishing him a prosperous and happy futnre.

Mr Sawtell In response expressed his rogret at leaving, and the high value which ha should always act upon thla mark of esteem on the part of those with whom he had been bo long BBBooluted. He should cherlah It with pride, aud hand It down to hla children after him. Then followed a general bind-ahaking, and thus ended one more of life's mauy meetings and partings.
