ELECTRIC RAILWAY IN LONDON
Messrs Mather and Piatt, says the London correspondent of tbe Manchester Guardian, have jast obtained the first contract for the Introduction of an eleotrlo train service into London. The directors of tha Oity of London and Southwark Subway having praotloally completed their tunnels, whloh pass nnder tbe Thames a little to tbe went of London Bridge, have now aooepted by negotiation with Mr William Mather tbe scheme of his firm, which shows that eleotrlo scleaoe has so advanoed an to make competent engineers and electricians oonfidect that trains oan h? worked io rapldly{that at eaoh station there shall be a three minute servloe with a maximum speed of twenty-five miles an hour, under conditions wbioh render underground locomotion less disagreeable than steam locomotion ' above ground This large contract, which will take about six months to carry out, has boon entrusted to Mr Mather on tbe results of competition with other eminent firms. Each train will accommodate 100 passengers in three p.ars. There are fire Btatlon* between the Oity terminus, near the Monument, and tbe Stockwe 1 end, on. the Burrey side of the river. The train mi'eage, on Mr Mather's plan, will be 2200 p&r Jay, All the dynamos and electrical apparatus are to be made at tho Salfofd Ironworks. The plant consists of a permanent station for generating the current, with engines of 1000-horae power, Edison H'pkinßon dynamos and motors of a new typ9 for tho traction oars, And complete electrio lighting for. the stations, carriages^ and signals.
