THE ORAKEI NATIVE MEETING

A Native meeting waa opened to-daj at the Maori settlement of Ukalhu la Orakel B»y. About 500 natives, many of them chiefs of high rank, were present. Considerable numbers of AnckUnd Europeam, ioolnding several ladies, also at* tended. The proceedings commenced with a Ohoroh service oondacted by Paal Tnwhare, who addressed the a*« sembly stating tbat they were, assembled to destroy all troubles that had arisen m this Island, and to make the Natives and Europeans one people. He urged that the Treaty of Waltangl had been broken by the present Government, who had bahaved treaoheroualy to the Natives. A, letter was read from Tawhialo, the Mtori King, who oould not attend. He stated tbat be wan pleated to hear of the endeavour to seoare jnstloe and right dealing foe the Maori people, but m striving to gain that end (hey must beware that the breakers did not overwhelm their oause. Speeches were delivered by several chiefs oondemnliig the police of the Government, 1 and eventually a resolution to uphold ! the Treaty of Waltangt was agreed to. Owing to the absence of the Native Minister and the Attorney-General, quss* , tiona conoerning land matters weie not dealt with. Auckland.
