THE WHEAT MARKET.

According to the official figures of the Victorian Government statist it appears that the wheat yield averages only 7*l bushels per aci* ; the total being 8,603,280 bushels. After providing for local consumption and for 6eed there will be no surplus left for export. It is, therefore, evident that New South Wales cannot look to her next neighbor for a supply of bread stuffs, and as South Australia has only c surplus of some 2,000,000 bushels she n)Uß]t necessarily go farther afield, as her own deficit ig calculated at 6^ million bushels. In connection with the contention of some writers on the subject that California will be able to Bupply the Sydney market at prices ranging from 4s 3^d to 4s 7d, some light is afforded by the remarks of the " Argug " which are worth noting. That journal says that wheat from California cannot bu landed (i.e. m Victoria) at lees than (Js 3d, duty paid, not to speak of the lower value it possesses as compared with Victorian wheat." If this be correct, then allowing for Sydney being a free port for wheat and consequently deduct ing Is 2£d as representing the Victorian d«jty per bushel (2s per lOOlbs), it follows that Californian wheat cannot be landed m Bydney at legs than 5s o^l. And it further follows that if thn cost of sending wheat from New Zealand to Sydney is B<l per bushel the value of wheat m >ew Zealand should be at least 4s 4d.
