MR COWEN ON AUSTRALIAN MUSIC.
Mr F. Cown, who acted as musical conductor at the Melbourne Exhibition, has returned to England, and m the course of an interview with the newspaper representatives said the Australians were naturally fond of music, but at the time of his arrival he found that their tastes had become degenerated. The Exhibition concerts, had, however, worked a marvellous revival m musical matters and the result was most asr tounding. So rapid and so effectual had been this revival that he confi dently stated that the choir at the Melbourne Exhibition was nearly equal to the choirs of Leeds and Birmingham, The press criticisms had been able and impartial, and helped considerably to create the enthusiasm for high-class music that now exists. Mr Cowen denied that he was composing an Australian symphony) as had been stated,
