Vesuvius bas lately been very active. It haa been rapidly throwing up a new cone of eruption about 30 or 40 yards to the southwest of the original one, and tbe fissure aoross the crater plain towards the west-south-west is increasing m size and m aoid emanations. It is possible, therefore, that an eruption may take plaoe soon on the side of the cone, sinoe the vent tends to shift along the fissure pointing m that direction.
