(Received March 16, 12 49 p.m ) Sydnby, Mutch 16. It Is understood that the Government of New South Wales are m communication with New Zealand as to whether tho latter coloay is prepand to consent to a renewal of the San Francisco mail contract for a year. The " Telegraph " m an article on the question, m which consideration is given to the proposed service to Vancouver, says that the prospects of the opening tip of an immediate trade with Canada are not such as to justify Australia m subsidising an expensive steam service. The San Francisco route, on the other hand, has been a continuous benefit to the colonies md the existing trade between the two countries should be conserved and further developed. Tbe " Telegraph " doeß not think the time has yet arrived for a fortnightly service, but recommends the re- 1 newal of the existing arrangement for ( • year and m that time full consider*- , tion could be given to the proposals of i Canada.
