(Reserve! Maroh 15. 2 31 p.m.) Thursday Island, Maroh 15. The following items of news are to hand :— Negotiations are proceeding with the Vatican to send a Nuncio to Pekin. Viscount Mori was assassinated on February 11 by fanatical religionists. A knife was plunged into Mori's abdomen because he entered a shrine without removing his boots. A treaty concluded between China and Portugal virtually places Macao at the disposal of the Chinese customs. China compelled Portugal to accept it, threatening a blocade of Macao. Fifty highwaymen have been executed at Kiroi, The "Japan Gazette" says tbat military relations between France and Japan have practically been severed. The steamer Tizan on the voyage between New Zealand and Hong Kong ran ashore at Palawan. A boat proceeded a hundred and forty miles to obtain assistance. The vessel was floated off and reached Manilla, and after repairs proceeded on her voyage to Hong Kong, The French have captured the town of Choch m Tonquin wluch defended, the> Chantse rebels. Little opposition wa& offered.
A fire occurred at the Palace at Pekia by whioh damage to the extent of threemillion taels was caused. In the Tsienkiang riots the houses of the British Consul and two clergymen were burnt. The Methodist Church, Amerioan Consulate, and Custom hoqse fWe partially destroyed,
