POLLUTING THE SIDE CHANNELS
TO THB IDITOB. Sib, — No doubt a large number of yon* readers, aa well as myself were struok by . tbe passive attltndo assumed by tho Borough Oounoil In the matter of the nuisance caused, throughout tha good township of Ashburton, by the aotion of. the Woollen Factory m sending down tb* refuse filth of their Institution through the aide ohannels of the . town. Ii |« » s open seoret that the attention of the) Oounoll has bean repeatedly oalled to th* faot by the Inspeotor o| Nuiaanoe* appointed by themselves, and tbat hla reports have not been reoelved ln th* -most oordlal manner. Thla hae not been ovorlcqked by certain householders here, who have, seeing the ntter Incapaotty of the O-nnoll to deal with the matter, taken the affair Into their own hands, and have determined to see It through to a finish. It will be remembered by many of yonr readers that tn Injunction waa obtained against tha Faotory sending this font matter through ' the river and when barred from th* privilege of fooling the river tbey hay* . deliberately and without any apparent permission, sent It through tho eid* ohannels. Unfortunately we oannot con* oeal from ourselves the faot that fever la rampant In tbe town, and that polluting tbe air must necessarily* lnorease tha' danger thereby caused. The ohannels In' some places are simply filthy. When tha oltfz-ens who have taken this matter lh hand with a view either to Immediately abating the nnlsanoa or prooeedlng by lndiotment against those who believe that for the purpose of gain they have. the right to p.lson a town, I think Ife will be In order to oall upon the Boroagb' Oounoll for an acoonotof their aotion In thi* most Important matter. The ergaments need against the Immediate abatement of this nuisance, oonld with equal justice b* applied to tanneries, slaughter houses, or any other description of Industry. Lan particularly anxious that the attention of the burgesses shonld be drawn to thla matter, as there have been several abatements of onfaaoees lately m compelling people to remove oasss, etc., from tha. sidewalk, bnt by some unaooonntek-et means the big nalssnoe bai been wn*looked. — lam, etc, AhtvHtjtoih-.
