Fhe mate thought the rope not s'rong enough, but Smith resolved to try It,. When down 60 :t the rope broke, and the unfortunate man fell the remaining 50ft - tn the bottom and was very much Injured. He was got out after some time, but died whilst being oonveyed to the hospital.
