THE STEWART ISLAND TIN DISCOVERIES.

The " O.D. Times ' reports that Mr 0. Robert son, the leader of the prospeoting party who are acting for Sydney oapitrlMs, arrived m Dunediu from Stewart Island op Wednesday evening with some splendid samp'es of tin, and m considerable quantities, which put lo the shade anything hitherto shown here. Mr Robertson catne over for the purpose of securing protection for hia disoovery, and as he ib anxfo.is not to be forestalled, he is not very communioatlve about the exaot locality of his operations. In reply to inqniries, however, he said he had no hesitation m siying that the tin discoveries m the island are real and substantial, and that there is a large extent of tin deposits m the streams and a number of lodes. As to his own diopoyerien, he states tbat the locality "a not near Professor Elaok's lode, and to show that he is m strange oountry he saya h : s party found a large river— the Urgost -m the island— which is not shown on the maps, and bo far as could be ascertained was not known to anyone on the ialacd. The, alluvial deposit of which be h,aa samples, was found tp be from 4ft to 6ft m depth. It contains a considerable quantity of gold, visible to the naked eye, aqd on an average, yields 40 speoa of gold to the dish. Mr Robertson and his party, following up this discovery, then came across what they bolieyed to be the true lode. This has bee,u traced for 10 or 1% miles, and Mr Robertson believes it could be traced for another eight miles, or 20 m all. He also found tbree cross lodes, everywhere coming across the ore always asst oiated with tin. He firmly believes tbat tin is to be found all over the island, as he saw indications of it 30 mi c* (?) north of Port William. The Bamples of alluvial tin, have been submitted to Profe^gnr Ulrich, and we understand he values the stuff at £60 per ton. As a'l the wash carries gold, it will be aeon that th^ disoovery is a mo3t important one, and further developments will be looked forward to with Interest -~ « Southland Times/ -^
