REPLY. RESULT OF THE DIVISION.

In the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone, m supporting the amendment moved by Mr Morley, said that the treatment of political prisoners was both brutal and inhuman. He asserted that the Government were powerless to avert Home Rule being granted to Ireland, and declined to disclose the duty of the Liberals. It was, he held, the policy of the Government to bring about a different state of things from what existed at present. MrGoschen, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, m dealing with the question, said that the arrest of political offenders was identical wiih the plan pursued by the administration- of Mr Gladstone. It was intended to ask the present Parliament to deal with local government for Ireland, but at present it would be perverted for political pur- | poses. Mr Parnell, who was received with great applause, said that Ireland only wanted power to de&l with matters concerning herself without the interests of the Empire. He admitted England was right to safeguard the supremacy ; of the Imperial Parliament. ! Mr H. Mathews, the Home Secretary, said that if the advice given m the past had been acted upon there would have been no necessity for the introduction of the Crimes Act. The amendment was lost by 339 to 260.
