More than a fifth of this, or something over 400000 acres, is not c -inside: ed worth reaping, so that the area to be reaped is reduced to 1,590,000 acres. The total yield is estimated at 6,210,000 bushels, or an average of 3 9-10 th bushels per acre. Taking into acoount the unreaped as well as the reaped area, and pi cinq the whole at 2,000 OOQ acrei, the average is reduced to 3 1-lOth bushels. Of this quantity at leist 3,5C 0,000 bushels will be required for food and for seed, so that 3,000,000 bushels represents the whole of the exportable surplus. This means tbat during 1889 the colony will only have m addition to whatever stocks remained over at the beginning of the year some 72,000 tons of breadstuff* to send away. There i? a marvellous difference between this total and tbat of 1888, but prices are higher, and the farmers will probably get a little over £500,000 for what they have to dispose of.
