NEW SOUTH WALES
Sydney, February 15. 1 Joe Mackay, the seaman who wag arrested on the charge of causing the death of another seaman, a Swede, named Andrew Nulander, by stabbing him during a quarrel m the street, has been acquitted and discharged from custody. Numerous cases of garrotting have occurred recently— almost an epidemic; but convictions are hardly obtainable owing to the perjury of witnesses. To-day, however, the Judge made an example oi two men who were convicted by sentencing them ta. ten years' penal servitude, and also* ordered the arrest of five witnesses forr perjury. " ■
