THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

General B3ojamln Harrison, of Indiana, Republican, is a grandson of President W. H. Barrisop, of Indiana, a great grandson of one of the signers of the Doolaratlon of Independence and a descendant of Harrison the Ragtolde. He was born m Ohio m 1833, and wai ed retted for the career of a lawyer. In 1853 when he was only twenty years of age. be married Miss O. L. Soott, the danghter of an Ohio clergyman- He removed to Indianapolis m 1854, and afterwards became a reporter of the Indiana Supreme Court By that time he had already commenced to take part In polltlos. He entered the Union army aa second lieutenant at the opening of the rebellion and served throughout tbe war, retiring m 1865 with the rank of brigadier-general, wbfob had been conferred upon him for his gallant condnot at the battle of Peachtree Creek. He is head of the legal firm of Harrison, Millar, and Elam, of IndUn spoils, who are lv the front rank of tbeir profession there. General Harrison is an admirable speaker, and is a man of great influence m the courts of Indiana. His Eersonal character is extrrmely high ; he i an elder of the Presbyterian Ohuroh, and till recently was a Sunday-school teaoher, conducting a large class of men of all ages Id connection with his own denomination. No one ban been able during this contest to point to any stain on his record, and there is little doubt he will dliobarge the duties of tbe Presidency with thorough conscientiousness. In 1880 he was selected Governor of lodiaoa, and In the following year he beoame United States Senator for Indiana, and served si* years, being beaten In the next eleotlon by Mr Pavld Tarpie, Damoorat. Like Mr Cleveland, be Is an advocate of Civil Seivice reform.
