FIRE AT PAPANUI.

» The " Preie " reports thtt shortly after midnight the whistle at the Railway Station lounded an alarm, and simultaneously a strong glare wss seen In the northern iky. Abont eight or ten men turned np at the Brigade station, bnt; seeing that the fire was evidently a long distance ontilde the olty boundary, Superintendent Tarton deolded not to •end out the Brigade. He rode out 4o the scene of the fire himself, and found that the outbreak oeonrred opposite tb e Papanol hotel. It originated In the shop of Mr Godfrey, carpenter, and spread to the premises of Mr Flnlay (blacksmith), < trad Mr Dunn (plumber), the last-named •hop being owned by Mr Godfrey. All the buildings mentioned were destroyed, there being no appliances for extinguishing the flames, not even so maoh so a bucket of water, to nie the words of one of the spectators. The buildings are said to be ineured In the New Zealand Office, And the loss Is roughly estimated at three •or four hundred pounds. The origin of ■the €re is unknown . A polloeman passed <the buildings at about half past eleren and hv no sign of any fir* at that time.
