THE SAMOAN QUESTION.

It is believed the feeling in America over the Samoan question will become calmer after the accession of General Harrison to the Presidential chair. February 4. The American naval authorities are sending large supplies of coal to Pagopago harbor, in the Samoan group of islands. Berlin, February 3. Count Herbert Bismarck was interviewed by a representative of the " New York Herald " re the Samoan question. He virtually said the island was not worth a single angry despatch. It was necessary to punish Mataafa, but Germany would co-opsrate with England and America. If it were found that German officials had exceeded their duty, they would be recalled. February 4 The "Nord Deutsche Zeitung" states that the announcement that Germany has declared war against Samoa untrue. The recent act is. merely for defensive purposes. , London, February 4. The "Times" this morning has a leading article dealing with the Samoan difficulty, in which it expresses the opinion that Dr Knapp, the German Consul at the group, should be cashiered. It adds that should another Conference be held as to Samoan affairs, it was the duty of England to strongly support the interests of Australia.
