But, you sly dog you, how dose you were aboH it all." Now, lilank bad made a sudden pot of money on the other side, and thought this was what he was being cohgratulated on, so he looked wise, and said, • 'Thanks, old fellow, I knew yon would rejoice m a f fiend's good luck. It all depends on bow you go about it you know." " Cunning dog, cunning dog,' 1 said the other, screwing np one eye and shaking his head mysteriously. " It'll be a good thing for Mlbs Emily." "Oh, yee; bat I was able to provide for her amply before yon know." "Yen, yes; I know, I know," said the other; •• but now she'll know what it is to have a mother ." A light broke m on Blank, and he said, ".Hey? Whew 1" and made off up the jetty, but before he got into a cab another friend began to congratulate him m the same way, and some one said something abont "the h»ppy Benedict." But all! this had Its effect, and Blank muttered odoo or twice to himself, " Tosh, I'm not io old." "Why shouldn't I" "More unlikely things than that," and so on. And not long after the sound of the loud timbrel was heard m Blank'a house, and friends received little packets of oakeand cards with something written on the cards that made one or two mammas say spitefully: "There, that scheming creature! Jaat what I thought it would be !*' Bat Blank doesn't 0»ro and neither dooa the governess, who is now Mrß Blank, and ali th|s domestic felicity might have been misted, simply because not thought of, If It hadn't been for the mistaken idea tut tad pot about •mo&g Blwk'i friends,
