THE FRENCH ELECTION
»- RESULT OF THE SEINE ELECTION. (Pbu Prbss Association.) Paris, January 27. Yesterday rioting took place m the city. The aristocratic quarters were tranquil, but the French studenii made a demonstration of hostility, and it was found necessary to mass troops m order to quell any disturbance. The election for the Department of the Seine took place to-day, when General Boulanger was returned, He polled 244,000, M. Jacques 162,000. Contrary to expectation there was little excitement m Paris over the election. Pabis, Jmusry2B. The result of the Seine election was received by immense crowds with great enthusiasm. The Republicans are mystified and enraged at General Boulanget's success. (Received January 29. noon,) Paris, Janaaty 28. Boulanger's success at the election for the Seine is attributed to quarrels betwen the Republican and Opportunist parties. M. Floquet's resignation is expel cd. A Republican alliance i has again been patched up for the purpose of keeping Boulanger out of office.
