THE BURNING OF A STEAMER.

A.TERRIBLE CATASTROPHE. HEROIC CONDUCT OF A DECK HAND. (Per Orient a. b. Liguria ) (Keoelved January 29. 1 p.m.) Albany, Junpaty 29 Further details of the burning ef the Mississippi steamer John Hanna, show that the catastrophe was tragic m the extreme. The vessel was wrapped m a sheet of flame three minutes after the first outbreak. Many were scalded to death by the bursting of the steam pipes when the steamer rebounded from the sand bank on to which she was steered. A great deal of heroism was performed by a deck hand named Giren. He sprang to the pilot house and stuck to the post till he had brought her back to tbe bank. By this time, however, he was imprisoned m the house, against which the flames were dashing m a wall of fire. Eventually Giren succeeded m reaching the shore, but he was terribly burned and finally died m indescribable agony. Many of those who jumped overboard stuck fast m the' mud, and as the vessel burned down to the water's edge were slowly roasted to death m full view of crowds assembled on shoze.
