A hollow rotating I cylinder of black wax, varying from 3in to 6in m length and abont tin m diameter, is placed on a simple revolving apparatus To this n applied the point of an engraving needle, or cutting stylos, fked on a mioi disc, whioh receives the voice through a speaking tube aid records the pitch and timbre, Keproduotlonu effected through the medium of a small and sensi tlye receiver attaohed to ear tubes. The prqceaa of receiving can be checked at will, and words imperfectly caught can be repeated; In testa made recently the reproduction of the voices of speaker* was clear and exact, whether given m and out as dictation of business letters, as song, rgcitation, or Imitation of birds and animals. The practical use of th.c invent tion when brought into commercial op e ra* tlons will be as, a ttubatitnte for the services ot stenography In point of accuracy and l speed. The instrument, it Is claimed. wiU record aV*o ;t a thousand words m smin on the cylinder, which can ba sent ia a box by post to any part of the United Kingdom, and whioh will, on being applied to the receiving apparatus, evolve the message m fha tones of the narrator. Praotioally, theroiore, the maohine does the work of Edfaon's electrical phonograph. Mr Tainter claims to have suooaeded with a preparation of w^x before Mr Edfion took up that form
