A "BEAM" IN HIS EYE.

Ons of the most extraordinary ophtbalmlo cases tbat have bean heard of m the colony «m brought under oar notice yesterday by a gentleman from the Bay Islands, now m Auckland, and on communloatlug with the medical gentleman who has the cane m hand we find that the statement made to oar reporter is accurate and correct. The afftir occurred at Okalba, B*y of Islands, and m»y shortly be described as follows : — ln May last a settler named Motfullen wai engaged cross ontting a kauri log. The staging on which ho stood &»ve way, and be fell oa to a stamp, a pr jeoting branch of wh'oh entered his eye. fie was treated by a local medloil tn<»n, who applied lotions to reduce the lnfUmmatlon, and a small splinter of wood was extracted, but no permanent relief wai obtained, and the face around the eye Bwelled to a great ex* tent. In Sept. last McMullen tried to resume work, bat was unable to continue, and on the adrloe of soms friends he oame to Auckland aud consulted an ephthalmio specialist. The surroundings c! the eye were then swoollen enormously and the lnfi munition was acute. Indeed, the eye itself was oovered, there being only a very minute hole through which the doctor could insert a probe. Upon probing under the eye the dootor made a most extraordinary discovery, for underneath the eye, m the cavity, he found a large piece of wood, aud when, by means of ; an operation this was removed it was found to be an inoh and ahalf m leugth, and the thickness of a man's little finger. It is needless to say tbat during the time i this huge foreign substance had been In the man's head he suffered Intense pain. Indeed, the wonder Is, that he has survived, but now tbat it Is removed the inflammation bas been reduced, and tte eye, being apparently uoiDJured, he Is able to see with it, although, of course, he !b not yet permitted to remove the bandages.
