ASHBURTON WOOL SALES

4 . The seoond series of wool sales for the leaaon, by the Ashbnrton wool brokers, ook place yesterday. There was not a *ood attendance of buyers, several who .re osaally good,cus*.on_6rfl being absent, -/hlle the three or four nayoomers operand very lightly. The catalogues of Messrs Miles and 0 > , Frledlander Bros., .nd D, Thomas cimprisad a total of i nearly 2000 b^lts, including some of the largest and beat clips of the district', but bhe farmers' wool oa the whole w»7 soiraely equal ln condition to tbat offered _t the previous sale. The result of toe sale was extremely disa- piloting. Vendors were prepared, by the reports of the Oorlatohuroh Bales, which had Intervened since the last sales held here, for some weakness lv prioes, but it was not anticipated tbat any serious drop would be Buff -rel, However, the sale throughout was entirely destitute of animation — In this respect presenting » marked contrast to its predtO-aaor. Prioes of good crossbred wools were very irregular, a few lota bringing prices equivalent to those obtained at laet sales, but tbe general run abowing a decline vary Ins, from jjl to |d par lb. Some of 'h-* station lines of merino wool sold fairly up to laat sales' values, but farm lots, whioh oons'sted ohlefly of ewe wool, badly got up, and more or less dingy and earthy, met with very llmitsd competition and suffered an average fall of £i per Ib. Good clean pieoes sold at hrm rates, but heavy and stained and looks were considerably lower. It was stated that the prioes obtained were generally quite equal to those now ourrent ln Ghristohuroh, but several owners were not iuolined to accept the reduced values, and more than the '.usual proportion of tho wool was passed m The Bale took place, aa ususl, In the Orange Hall, bat the luncheon was at the Somer- ! set Hotel.
