London. Jannary 10 to 12. The Duke of Portland is seriously ill. Colonel Hughes Hallett is suffering from a stroke of paralysis. The steamer Priam, bound to Hong Kong, has been wrecked, and nine of the crew drowned. Edison is receiving Mr Gladstone's speech at the great Birmingham meeting m November by phonograph. The Hon Fielding Clark, Chief Justice of Fiji, has been promoted to the position of Puisne Judge at Hong Kong. Kilrtin has challenged Jackson to fight him. The Australian boxer has accepted and the fight will come of) m March. The statement that the betrothal of the Czarewitch and Princess Alix Victoria of Hesse would take place at Easter is denied. It is reported that Lord Dufferin, who is on his way home from India, is engaged' m concluding a treaty of alliance between England and Italy. The Council of the Royal College of Surgeons have passed a motion censuring Sir Morell Mackenzie for having published a book which contained charges against his colleagues. The bankruptcy proceedings m the case of Denois, the proprietor of the "Court Society Review," have been adjourned, with a view of arriving at a settlement with his creditors. Archibold Forbes published a letter m which he expresses the opinion that the charges levelled against Sir R. Morier of betraying the German army to the French are inherently baseless. Sir # Robert Gent Davis, M.P. for Kennington, committed to gaol m November last for contempt of Court for the non-payment of fiduciary funds of his brother, is about to be released. Lord Charles Beresford intends to move m the House of Commons that the English fleet be strengthened so as •o be m a position to defend the coastal trade and commerce and also the Colonies against two Powers combined. The Marquis of Salisbury has informed Mr T. F. Bayard, American Secretary of State, that he refuses to discuss the Sackville incident since the latter had? contrary to international usage, received his passports before any reason, as promised, had reached the Imperial Government.
