DISASTROUS CYCLONE IN AMERICA
HUNDREDS OF PERSONS KILLED GREAT DAMAGE (pee pbkss association.) New York, January 10. A cyclone has devastated Reading, m Pennsylvania, fifty people being killed. It struck and destroyed the silk mills, m which 250 people were at work. Only part of them escaped. . It_ r is__st&ted---that seventy persons pnncipally girls, were killed at a eilk factory at Reading, which was destroyed by a cyclone. The tornado was felt severely at Pittsburg and Williamsport besides Reading, and scores of buildings, including many churches, were completely destroyed. Hundreds of persons were killed. Appalling reports are being received as to the destruction of property and loss of life m consequence of the snow storms and cyclone experienced at New England, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The oldest residents assert nothing approaching such violence is ever remembered m the States. Most of the railways are blocked, and the damage will amount at least to 5,000,000 dollars. January 11: The cyclone experienced yesterday wrecked the suspension bridge over Niagara and caused huge buildings to fall just like a house of cards. It is believed the loss of life will exceed the estimate. In many instances where houses were wrecked they caught fire and the occupants were roasted alive m the ruins. i Washington, January 10. During the gale at Pittsburg, a large new building was blown down, burying twenty-eight people, many of whom are known to be dead. Seventeen persons are reported to have been killed andejghty injured.
