RIFLE SHOOTING

The Ashburton Rifles fired their first competition for the New Zealand Clothing Factory's Oup on Monday afternoon, the officers and non commissioned offiodra prize of £10 being divided amongst the higbeat soorera The match was a handicap on*, ranges, 200 yds, standing j 300 yda, kneeling ; and 400 yds, any position ; 5 shots at each range. The day wai a favorable one, but the etanding and kneeling positions; had the effect of preventing any big scoring being made* A. good number turned out there being 38 competitors. Private S. Salek («qratch) topped the sooring with 42 points taking the Ist prize of £2, also tbe range priza of 7s 6d for the beat s score at 400 ydi. Private Undrili(handioapoflopbintß)com. ing a close second with 41 points, taking 30s, and the range priza of 7* 6d for the best score s the 300 yd^. Sergeant-Major Hayes took the range prize for thfe 1 200 yards, and Private H. O. Cralghead the prize for most bulls-eyeß. A good deal of interest wae taken m the shooting as at the commencement of the last range %he place of highest scorer' was lobked upon as almost a moral for Private Undrell who had a clear lead of 9 points from the next mim and 11 points ahead off Private Sa'ek. .The latter, however, gained 12 points on his man, thus landing him top by one point oaly. tfhe handicapping came out very satisfactorily, the prize winnera coming tfose to each other.
