It is stated here that the Mahdi m a letter to Osman Digna writes that the officer m reporting the capture of Erain Bey mentioned that the white traveller was Stanley. The cavalry who reconnoitred the enemy's trenches to-day, report them to be very strong, and thaf the followers of the refcel leader are numerous. The country is open and free from bush. The Mahdi says that Emm Bey and Stanley were fettered and delivered captive by Osman Salek, the Mahdi's Lieutenant Fado, another white traveller, escaped, but it was expected that he might be recaptured. London, December 17. Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Clarke, m a letter to "The Times," denounces the Egyptian war party. (Received December 18, noon.) London, December 17. Government are doing their utmost to ascertain whether there is any truth m the statement that Erain Bey and Stanley have been captured by the Mahdi's adherents* If they are convinced that Osman Digna's letter is not merely a false boast they propose to ascertain whether there is any hope of effecting their release by negotiation.
