PROFESSOR BROWN.
STARTING OF aWbOH BXPBDITIOM. (PER rRESS A88OOIATI0N.) Dvnbdin, Deoember 16. A telegram from the "Dally Times'" expedition to dlaoover Professor Brown, lost between Lake Manapoarl and Smith Sound, states that (com the nature of tbe weather there fa every reason to fear the wont. Mr McKlnnon, who was sent by Government to jolo Mr Boss ("Daily Time*"), Mr T. MoKecz'o, M.H.R, and Mr Mitchell (Manager of Manapoorl itatlon), left Danedln In the afternoon, and wou d reach Lnmiden at midnight, when • atart woald be made at once. A glance at tbe map (Bays the " Otago Dally Times ") will show that, supposing the party to have been three or four miles from the lake, the distance to Deep Oove, In Smith Sound, would, be about eight miles m a direct line. The distance which Professor Brown would have to travel to reach provisions would probably * be twloe that, or sixteen miles. It is quite likely that he pushed on over the Saddle until overtaken by tba rain, and, finding himself so far from the camp, : deolded to make for the depot, the flooded state of the rivera preventing hlo returu from there. Unless he met with an aooldent, this explanation seems most pro* bable, as from the mountainous nature of the oonntry he oould hardly lose his way m the bush.
