GREAT FIRE IN SYDNEY.

B«DiraK f November 25 One of the most disastrous fires which has occurred m the city for some yearfl broke out at ten o'clock on Saturday night. The building m which the fire originated ii a large four-story one, situated m Market street, and occupied by the Sydney. "Evening News." "Town and Country Journal," " Illustrated News" and several professional offices. The Metropolitan Fire Brigado and all Volunteer Brigades were smartly on the scene, hiut were unable to prevent the destruction of the block of buildings, though thoir effortß were successful m preventing 1 the spread of the ,fire to the adjacent premisos, which ' escaped with slight damage. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it must have had good hold when first discovered, as it spread with ' lightning rapidity, and m a few minutes there was nothing left to mark the fine block of offices but a pile of seething emberd, etc, The sight while the fire was raging was one of grandeur, and it was quite 2i hours before the danger to adjacent premises was removed. The amount of the loss^ is' jinknown, but the prerrises were insured m the Australian Mutual Insurance Office for £32,000, of which total, however, niueteuthg is re-insured m various offices. The other insurances are unknown, but it is believed they amount to fully £15,000 ; The whole of the machinery used m connection with the , publication ot the papers mentioned was destroyed, but as the proprietors had taken the precaution to have a duplicate elected m a separate building, it is expected that the publication will not bo long delayod.
