The origin of the fire is unknown, but it must have had good hold when first discovered, as it spread with ' lightning rapidity, and m a few minutes there was nothing left to mark the fine block of offices but a pile of seething emberd, etc, The sight while the fire was raging was one of grandeur, and it was quite 2i hours before the danger to adjacent premises was removed. The amount of the loss^ is' jinknown, but the prerrises were insured m the Australian Mutual Insurance Office for £32,000, of which total, however, niueteuthg is re-insured m various offices.
