Aesoolatlon, held at the Corn Exchange, to consider the alterations In the rail wiy tariff, whioh provides' ipt the carriage of grain by eo'ual weight inataad of at per eack, it was resolved to represent to the Govarnment that the farmioft and oommetatal Intoreeta of Canterbury will bo seriously prejadiced by «iaoh Bobonge — firafc^ by the imposition of I an additional tax on wheat of nearly ten per cent ; second, by the vexations delayß that will wise, owing to the neoeaaity for weighing all consignments ; third, by the an«atlefactory mode of ascertaining the oorreot weights, The existing system having worked satisfactorily m Canterbury for many yearn, and the farmers being contend with it, they utrongly protest against any change being made, and respeotfally reqnest that the provinoial district of Canterbury be exempt from the new method of oharging railway freights."
