In the Society Group matters bave changed but little Biuoe last advices In Raiatea the natives are still In hills, and threaten stubborn resistance if a'tscked, being moro than ever determined not to submit to French rule m the island. They master some three thousand, and are entrenohed m several strong positiona. When the Richmond ranched the Harvey Group it was found that the various islands had b?en formally Annexed, nnder a protectorate, to Great Britain by H M.S. Hyacinth. O»pt Bart, who had hoisted the British flag on each island. The event was the causa of muoh reiololag to tbe Natives. H.MS Egerla left Tonga for a cruißß shortly before tbo departure nf the Richmond Shn was bound for Fiji to take certain soundings, and wonld subsequently come on to Anokland.
